City of Johnston officials have completed the zoning and ordinance changes which are necessary to consider a developer’s request to create a new indoor shooting range facility in an established commercial area on Johnston Drive. The Board of Adjustment recently granted a Special Use Permit for the proposed facility, and the City Council has revised and clarified ordinances relating to Public Health and Safety and Special User Permits which will ensure that the facility operates within City guidelines.
If development proceeds it could help maintain momentum for new development in the Merle Hay Road Gateway area. While the long-term plan (20+ years) calls for the development of a housing village in the area, the proposed shooting range would allow continued use of the structure until the property is ready for redevelopment.
